How Solar Panels Work

At the heart of solar panels is the phenomenon known as the photovoltaic effect. Solar panels are primarily made up of semiconductor materials, with silicon being the most commonly used. These materials have unique electrical properties that allow them to convert sunlight into electricity.

When sunlight, which is composed of photons, strikes the surface of the solar panel, it excites the electrons within the semiconductor material. This process generates an electric current. The semiconductor material is deliberately doped to create a flow of electrons, establishing a directional current.

The movement of electrons in one direction creates direct current (DC) electricity. This DC electricity is the initial form of electricity produced by solar panels.

To power most household appliances and feed electricity into the grid, the DC electricity generated by solar panels is converted into alternating current (AC) by an inverter. AC is the standard form of electricity used in homes and businesses.
